Why do Australians gamble so much?

The number of Australians gambling has risen from 5.7 million in 2008 to 5.9 million in 2016, according to new figures released by the Department of Social Services.

The figures show the number of gambling households has risen by 1.7 per cent.

The number is higher than the national average of 1.4 per cent, according the latest figures released.

This year’s figures show there were 9,769 gambling households.

The average family income of gambling owners was $71,000.

The data shows the number has been growing faster in rural areas.

The figure is up 8 per cent from last year, but it is lower than the annual increase in incomes of 5.4 million households in metropolitan areas.

In a statement, the department said there was still more work to be done to improve the quality of life in rural Australia.
